Class 5B

2016 - 2015

International Rocket Project

Tree Time

World Book Day

Collaborative independent work based around the question 'Would you rather have one day of freedom, or live a lifetime in a cage?'

What amazing ideas and further questioning this sparked off! What would you do with your one day? What legacy would you leave behind? Can you make an impact on the world from behind bars? Who did that?

We used iPads, laptops and good old pen and paper to create our presentations!
Watch this space... They are coming soon!

Researching Jesus and his oppression, his arrest, crucification and the long lasting impact on the world.

Researching Anne Frank and her belief that people are inherently good, her faith in humanity and strength of positive thinking.

Researching The Suffragettes and the impact of their actions on the lives and roles of women in our society today!

Researching Martin Luther King and his 'dream' of equality among all.

Researching Jesus and his oppression, his arrest, crucification and the long lasting impact on the world.

During Literacy we have been discussing, hot seating characters from The Highwayman and using games such as Conscience Alley to deepen our understanding of what the characters might have been 'feeling'.
Year 5 were given the task of planning our Rejoice Assembly- Memorial Sacrifice.
Can you guess the topic in year 5 from our displays?
Enjoying our Christmas Party!
Last week some of our Year 5 pupils were lucky enough to take part in the High 5's sessions at St John Bosco. They had a wonderful time learning and sharing literacy and numeracy skills.

In Year 5, linked to our Geography Topic, we are focusing on Mexican Art. We are working towards creating a bright and colourful shrine to St Teresa. Our artwork will be displayed in the Year 5 corridor so that we can see it and smile in remembrance of St Teresa.

Mexican Art is all about using bright and breathtaking colours that make you feel like you’re in a different world! Mexican art is about vivid colours, materials and designs, it is so unique and extraordinary and it is great to go wild with!

As part of our Science topic this half term we have been learning about Life Cycles of plants and animals.

We have been so very excited to have the opportunity to observe caterpillars move through the different stages of their life cycle in front of our very own eyes!

Seeing them develop from tiny caterpillars to beautiful butterflies has been an incredible experience. We have been literally bringing science to life!

During Autumn 2 half term we will be learning all about North America and focusing particularly on the USA and New York.

We started our topic with an exciting trip, visiting 12 of the most famous cities in the USA.

We can’t wait to see where the this learning journey will take us!

Linking English with our History topic has really allowed us time to engage with the experiences of evacuee children during the Second World War.

We have been using our History learning to write a fictional recount, in first person, as though we were actually there at the time. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and parents/ carers for bringing history to life with the many personal stories, artefacts and resources, which you have contributed.

During this topic we have explored the use of the following to make our writing clearer and more exciting:

Adverbs

Adjectives

Time Connectives

Relative clauses

Exciting vocabulary liked with our spelling focus words

We look forward to sharing our finished recounts with you all, during the parent/ carer meetings coming up soon!

During Autumn 1 half term we have worked hard to appreciate place value as a basis of understanding for the upcoming topics. This has included: reading, writing and partitioning numbers up to 1000, 000, ordering numbers in ascending and descending order, rounding numbers and using the bigger and smaller signs, using negative numbers and addition and subtraction using appropriate methods.

Look at the wonderful team work which has been used in our classrooms.

Year 5   2014 - 2015

In Year 5, during the World War 1 Memorial Week we had the pleasure of developing our cooking skills using similar ingredients and recipes which would have been used during the World War 1 days. It was a fun, but also a reflective day making us value the importance of team work.
In Year 5 during English we refer to amazing writing as 'tasty writing'! We spent a lesson demonstrating that by decorating plain cakes with numerous 'tasty toppings' each representing vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation. We know which cake we would rather have AND what we want our writing to be like!
In Year 5, during Maths, we understand how important Place Value is and we extend our understanding with practical activities and team work.
During English we take time to discuss and mind map our ideas. we have found that this really helps us to up level our writing and create better complex sentences.
This week in Year 5 we have been investigating the process of evaporation. We created set up in the classroom with a washing line and hung up a wet T-shirt. We used a hairdryer as a heat source and observed as the water evaporated and changed state from a liquid to a gas.

In Year 5, Reading time is special time. It is a time when we can relax, unwind and let our imagination grow. As well as having a beautiful library to read in, we also read every day in class.
