Class 5S

2015 - 2016

Tree Time

World Book Day

During Literacy we have been discussing, hot seating characters from The Highwayman and using games such as Conscience Alley to deepen our understanding of what the characters might have been 'feeling'.
Can you guess the topic in year 5 from our displays?
Year 5 were given the task of planning our Rejoice Assembly- Memorial Sacrifice
Today we practised for the Aladdin Performance which is coming up soon! What an amazingly talented group this is! We are so proud of you! Well done year 5.

Mrs Sloan and the Year 5 team
Collaborative independent work based around the question 'Would you rather have one day of freedom, or live a lifetime in a cage?'

What amazing ideas and further questioning this sparked off! What would you do with your one day? What legacy would you leave behind? Can you make an impact on the world from behind bars? Who did that?

We used iPads, laptops and good old pen and paper to create our presentations!
Watch this space... They are coming soon!

Researching Jesus and his oppression, his arrest, crucification and the long lasting impact on the world.

Researching Anne Frank and her belief that people are inherently good, her faith in humanity and strength of positive thinking.

Researching The Suffragettes and the impact of their actions on the lives and roles of women in our society today!

Researching Martin Luther King and his 'dream' of equality among all.

Researching Jesus and his oppression, his arrest, crucification and the long lasting impact on the world.

Aspirations Week

As part of Aspirations Week, children in Year 5 had an amazing opportunity to learn and explore what University life is like.

By discussing topics such as: what courses are offered at Universities, how you get to attend University and practical information about financing further education, children have a much better understanding of what University is all about!

There was a lot of excited faces when Halls of Residence were discussed and while playing fun games teaching us about life on campus!

Thank you so much Professor Fluffy! No doubt we will see you there!
Last week some of our Year 5 pupils were lucky enough to take part in the High 5's sessions at St John Bosco. They had a wonderful time learning and sharing literacy and numeracy skills.
In year 5 we have been growing potatoes as part of our science topic (plant reproduction) and WW2 topic (Dig for Victory). Can you believe these little beauties have grown from old potatoes left behind! Amazing!

In 5S we have been working hard in Maths to develop our independent learning skills and to use those skills when solving problems and puzzles.

As part of our History topic in the Autumn 1 half term we have been exploring the difficult topic of World War 2.

As part of it we have been exploring the following questions:

Why did World War 2 happen? What kind of a person was Adolf Hitler in his early days?   What circumstances allowed a man like Adolf Hitler to lead the German nation? What was the Holocaust? What was is like to live in Britain during the Second World War? What message should we learn from these tragic events? What message of hope can we draw from this?

During the topic pupils have created a wonderful ‘learning corridor display’, to which we have been adding to continuously.

We hope that you will be able to come and see it for yourselves during the parents meeting sessions coming up soon.

We have been working as a team to write a poem inspired by this week’s Anti-Bullying discussions.

We hope you like it.

I dream of a world…

I want to live in a world where everyone plays.

I dream of a world where nobody hates.

The gardens of the world are all so very near.

Why should any of us have to live in fear?

The borders of countries like fences they stand.

What happened to together? To lending a hand?

I want to live in a world, which works in unity together.

I dream of a world where it doesn’t matter whether you were born in this garden, that one, or some other.

After all- the world is like everybody’s mother.

I want to live in a world where politics are fair,

not to be based on greed and despair.

As children of God, our parents and the Earth,

why is it so hard to believe in the truth?

We are all so very special, different in our ways-

languages, traditions-  all bound together like a maze.

I dream of a world where living out our lives is done with love and respect, which survives longer than a week, a month or a year.

Where nobody- ever- will have to live in fear.

During Autumn 1 half term we have worked hard to appreciate place value as a basis of understanding for the upcoming topics. This has included: reading, writing and partitioning numbers up to 1000, 000, ordering numbers in ascending and descending order, rounding numbers and using the bigger and smaller signs, using negative numbers and addition and subtraction using appropriate methods.

Look at the wonderful team work which has been used in our classrooms.

In Year 5 we have been working really hard to improve the presentation of our work. This includes doing our best to use cursive handwriting. This is not always easy and requires patience and practise, but look at all the improvements we have made! There are some wonderful examples here! Keep working hard Year 5- it will pay off in the end! We would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents/ carers at home for supporting us with home handwriting practise.

As part of our Science topic this half term we have been learning about Life Cycles of plants and animals.

We have been so very excited to have the opportunity to observe caterpillars move through the different stages of their life cycle in front of our very own eyes!

Seeing them develop from tiny caterpillars to beautiful butterflies has been an incredible experience. We have been literally bringing science to life!

Year 5   2014 - 2015

During English we take time to discuss and mind map our ideas. we have found that this really helps us to up level our writing and create better complex sentences.
In Year 5 during English we refer to amazing writing as 'tasty writing'! We spent a lesson demonstrating that by decorating plain cakes with numerous 'tasty toppings' each representing vocabulary, conjunctions, openers and punctuation. We know which cake we would rather have AND what we want our writing to be like!

In Year 5, Reading time is special time. It is a time when we can relax, unwind and let our imagination grow. As well as having a beautiful library to read in, we also read every day in class.

In Year 5, during Maths, we understand how important Place Value is and we extend our understanding with practical activities and team work.

This week in Year 5 we have been investigating the process of evaporation. We created set up in the classroom with a washing line and hung up a wet T-shirt. We used a hairdryer as a heat source and observed as the water evaporated and changed state from a liquid to a gas.
In Year 5, during the World War 1 Memorial Week we had the pleasure of developing our cooking skills using similar ingredients and recipes which would have been used during the World War 1 days. It was a fun, but also a reflective day making us value the importance of team work.
