Class 5S

On Friday, we visited the L15 Food Hub to learn about how Imagine If charity help distribute food to those in need. We volunteered by signing people in and helping them fill their baskets with food. It was great to be out in the community contributing to something which makes a difference to people’s lives.

On Monday, we visited Claremont Farm on the Wirral.

We participated in four different activities – cooking soup and biriyani with Chef James, making seed bombs out of clay and soil, foraging for edible plants and learning how to set a table.

We had a fantastic day outdoors in the fresh air and with the sheep... We survived the cold too!

This week we have had a great opportunity to work with Chef James. A professional chef, who taught us so much about our senses and how they are used to guide cooking and food recognition. Who ever knew we had so many taste buds! The food tasting sessions were so much fun we decided to recreate them using the herbs from our Edible Garden. Could you recognise  the difference between the taste of chocolate and apple mint? Could you distinguish between coriander and parsley?

Thank you to all the parents, carer and children for making a wonderful effort to help celebrate the start of our next REAL project. The costumes were fantastic and a great addition to our Rio Carnival Riches theme. We listened to Brazilian music; created our own Samba inspired pieces; explored Brazilian borders with other countries in South America and tasted some of Mrs Sloan’s Brazilian Beef Stew. What a great way to get us excited about our learning!

As part of our new REAL project and the Geography curriculum, we have been exploring the whole world! We started by looking at the continents, zoomed in to South America and then even closer to Brazil. Once there we explored the Amazon Rainforest and creatures that lurk within it, but also the tribes that not many are privileged to see. Check out Miss O’Reilly’s Year 5 corridor display and the forest that has ‘grown’ there!

Our learning this Term has been centred around the essential question ‘What Riches lie in Poverty’. We have been busy researching poverty around the world; in Brazil and also in the U.K. There have been some difficult facts discovered and some fantastic discussions. Most importantly we are looking to see what WE can do to help… Watch this space for some exciting news as we go deeper into the project.

A new and exciting transformation has happened to our classrooms over Christmas break in preparation for this REAL topic. We look forward to sharing this with you all soon. Please feel free to come and see our amazing learning spaces. We are looking at the contrast between riches and poverty around the world and in the U.K.

Please encourage children to be independent learners at home and research towards our class learning. Some suggested probing questions to help along are: What is poverty? What are most deprived areas in the world? How do we measure poverty? What help is there for those suffering in poverty? Why is poverty something that is still a world issue? What can we do?
