Class 6M/B

2015 - 2016

In 6MB's maths group we have been using our problem solving skills to plan a camping holiday. We were given a budget of 800 pounds. We had to chose from a location and then plan activities, food packs and equipment needed whilst we were camping. We needed to use all four operations in our calculations to make sure we didn't overspend!

6MB's literacy group have been working hard on the story of War Game by Michael Foreman. During one of our lessons, we worked in groups and transferred the story onto a storyboard.
6MB have been studying the topic of light in science. We have been investigating how light travels. We found that light travels in straight lines and proved this by completing a simple experiment. We cut holes in pieces of card and used a torch t provide a light source. The light would only travel through to shine on the wall when all of the holes were lined up correctly. If the holes were not in a straight line, then the opaque card blocked the light and it couldn't travel through.
Mrs Mawdsley's maths group have been very busy working with numbers up to 1 million.
In year 6 we have been busy during our writing focus on letters. We have been reading lots of different letters and learning what features need to be included in each one.

Year 6   2014 - 2015

Stories, stories, stories and more stories…

Katrice Horsley, who is a professional storyteller, visited our school to work with each year group and some parents too. She shared her love of stories with us by telling us lots of amazing stories.

As the National Storytelling Laureate, she visits lots of schools and we loved listening to her storytelling. Here are some quotes from our Year 6 pupils about her visit:

Georgia Taylor: Katrice Horsely was an amazing inspiration to not just me to everyone. Her quote was… “My advice is, just go out there and tell stories, you are perfect for who you are.”

Paddy Brennan: I liked your laugh and your story telling. You are so, so good! How do you think of all those stories. I also liked your language.

Georgia Sweeney: Katrice Horsely was like no other storyteller, she was such an inspiration to me and many others. She inspired me to enter the Radio 2 ‘500 Words Competition’ and without her I wouldn’t have the guts to join. Since it has recently been Aspirations Week, I think she was a BIG aspiration!

Oliver Malkin: Katrice Horsely is a amazing story teller. She tells little kid’s nursery stories and big kids like year 6 little bit of horror stories. The other week Katrice asked our Head teacher if she could have year 6 come again and she told us a horror story and it was scary. She inspired me and everyone else.

Isobel Eales:  Katrice Horsely is a lovely person, my favorite quote of hers was: “Let your imagination take you anywhere you want!” She also quoted that: “Don’t tell the story, be the story!” It was a fun lesson.

In Mrs Mawdsley's maths group this week we have been solving problems involving reading scales. We then put our skills to good use by making some fruit cocktail drinks. Which did we prefer? Was it the Marvellous Mawdsley, Terrific Torley or the O'Lovely O'Reilly???

Our science topic is light. We have been investigating light and how it travels. We found that light only travels in straight line. We have also looked at the eye and how it works.

January is the month where Lucy Hannon 6MB has her turn of being Junior Lord Mayor of Liverpool. During this month she will attend many events, at some she will have the honour of opening new buildings and activities. Some of the events she will attend and participate in are:
Civic Service At St Nicholas, Opened the library in the City Centre, Jewish Ceremony to celebrate the Holocaust, Services at St George's Hall.

"6MB worked in the Wow room yesterday to experience what life was like in the trenches. We have been using a book called Dear Jelly in literacy, which is a series of letters between siblings sent whilst the brothers are serving in WW1. We wrote our own letters from the trenches, but decided that they would be too truthful and upsetting for Robert to send home!"
