You might remember that in January Year 5 won an amazing competition ran by the University Of Liverpool, and as winners will have an exciting trip to the Ness Botanic Gardens on the 17th May 2016.
The day will consist of a walk around the gardens with interactive activities. The children will learn about plants, ecology, and evolution! There will also be opportunity to see what going to University is really like and what focus and dedication can lead to.
We are all very excited to have this opportunity. More details will follow in preparation for this trip.
Well done Year 5.
Want to know how we carry out calculations in this year group?
These handy videos have been filmed by the children to show you the methods we are using.
These methods are being taught all year through, so your child may not be fully confident until the end of this year.
Many thanks to all the parents/ carers and members of the community, who by purchasing tickets for the Fundraising Musical Performance, ‘Angel’, have raised….. towards the charity- The Olive Branch for Children.

Further donations are always welcome and can be made directly to the charity by following the link above.
The generosity of our community is something to be proud of and we are blessed to be surrounded by those who care for each other as well as those beyond our community.
The children performed beautifully and their hard work and commitment, which involved extra practise during their own time, was really worth it.
The song ‘Angel’, closing the performance was first sang and performed by the choir of children in Tanzania, who will be benefiting from the funds raised. What a wonderful way to show that their voices have truly been heard!
Special Thanks
Many thanks, also, to ALL the school staff and members of the community involved in organising this event, John Croker and Jo Philpot who wrote Angel (Malaika), Mrs Deans and Mr Barnes who organised the musical performances showcasing the talents and hard work of our children, Northcote Primary School Brass Band for joining us in performing, and ALDI, who very generously provided the tasty refreshments, which were served following the performance.
True community spirit, at this time of the year! A celebration of working together in unity and good spirit.
The following link shows a short clip, demonstrating the wonderful work of The Olive Branch for Children and at the very end names our school as one of the top donators to the music project. Something to be very proud of! Thank you all and Merry Christmas.

Last year, Year 5 worked hard to build a ‘business idea’, from which a profit could be made and donated to charity. The charity we chose to support is The Olive Branch for Children. Here is some information about the wonderful work they do, with the help of communities like ours.
‘The Olive Branch for Children helps remote communities in Tanzania assess their primary needs and establish programs that target the most vulnerable. The goal is to establish community-led programs that empower remote communities and generate models that can be replicated in communities throughout Tanzania and elsewhere.’

Using maths skills taught during lesson time, our pupils researched the most cost effective ways to produce sweet jars, which could be sold. Furthermore, thanks to the support of parents/ carers, they worked towards raising the money that was then used as a start-up cost for their ‘business venture’.
I am pleased to say that their hard work and enthusiasm has truly payed off, and have raised £100, which has since been donated to a very worthy cause. The remainder of the sweet jars will be sold at the Year 5 parent/ career meetings coming up soon, at a cost of £1-£3 per jar.
Learning from this good example, this Year 5 group has already started to think about their ‘business plans’, and we look forward to sharing these with you all very soon!
The generosity of our community is something we are very proud of and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the pupils, staff and parents/ carers for your continued support.
Linking English with our History topic has really allowed us time to engage with the experiences of evacuee children during the Second World War.
We have been using our History learning to write a fictional recount, in first person, as though we were actually there at the time. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and parents/ carers for bringing history to life with the many personal stories, artefacts and resources, which you have contributed.
During this topic we have explored the use of the following to make our writing clearer and more exciting:
Adverbs
Adjectives
Time Connectives
Relative clauses
Exciting vocabulary liked with our spelling focus words
We look forward to sharing our finished recounts with you all, during the parent/ carer meetings coming up soon!
The Year 5 Family Tree of Success
While settling into the routines of new classes in Year 5, we took time out to reflect on the fact that while in school we are like one big family- learning together, playing together and supporting one another.
As staff, we recognise that a big part of that is to celebrate the many achievements our pupils reach every day!
These include: good attendance and punctuality; fantastic reading; being chosen as star pupils; reaching bronze, silver or gold awards; showing good manners; being good friends; trying our best or simply having a welcoming smile!
The Year 5 Family Tree of Success is a way of recognising the many wonderful things, which help to keep our Year 5 family strong and successful!
We look forward to seeing the Celebration Tree blossom with many achievements, which await us this year!
As part of our History topic in the Autumn 1 half term we have been exploring the difficult topic of World War 2.
As part of it we have been exploring the following questions:
Why did World War 2 happen? What kind of a person was Adolf Hitler in his early days? What circumstances allowed a man like Adolf Hitler to lead the German nation? What was the Holocaust? What was is like to live in Britain during the Second World War? What message should we learn from these tragic events? What message of hope can we draw from this?
During the topic pupils have created a wonderful ‘learning corridor display’, to which we have been adding to continuously.
We hope that you will be able to come and see it for yourselves during the parents meeting sessions coming up soon.
During Autumn 2 half term we will be learning all about North America and focusing particularly on the USA and New York.
We started our topic with an exciting trip, visiting 12 of the most famous cities in the USA.
We can’t wait to see where the this learning journey will take us!
